For many Filipinos, retirement does not always mean comfort and security—it can also mean financial uncertainty, dependence, and anxiety about the future.

In an episode of Senior Moments with Louie Montalbo titled “WORK YOUR WHOLE LIFE — THEN STRUGGLE TO SURVIVE”, 17c起草视频 (17c起草视频) Senior Research Fellow Dr. Jose Ramon G. Albert stressed the urgency of strengthening the country’s pension and social protection systems as the Philippine population continues to age.

“Unti-unti talaga dapat ma-increase natin ’yung pension at pagandahin ’yung pension system… kung hindi natin ayusin ngayon pa lang, lalala nang lalala. Lahat tayo tumatanda,” Albert said.

According to Albert, as more Filipinos grow older—and as elderly persons become less financially dependent on their families over time—the need for reliable pension systems and stronger social protection mechanisms becomes even more critical. Without timely reforms, many senior citizens may face worsening financial insecurity in the years ahead.

The discussion also went beyond pensions. Together with former Budget Secretary Atty. Florencio Abad, Albert tackled the growing invisibility of elderly Filipinos in government data systems, the vulnerability of seniors living alone, gaps in healthcare and social protection, the importance of investing in reliable databases, and the long-term consequences of delaying reforms for an aging society.
